"Sink or Swim: The Crucial Importance of Swim Lessons"

Solano County families are flocking to pools, lakes, and waterfronts as summer temperatures soar.

Swim lessons are more important than ever, providing essential skills that can prevent tragic accidents.

The American Academy of Pediatrics reports that formal lessons can greatly reduce drowning risks for young children.

Learning to float, tread water, and breathe safely in the water equips kids and adults for emergencies.

Swimming also offers lasting health benefits—from cardiovascular fitness to improved coordination—and boosts confidence, problem-solving, and social skills.

No matter your age or experience, it’s never too late to start learning, or to help your child become water safe.

Local organizations across Solano County, including Fairfield Aquatics, Vacaville Parks & Recreation, and Benicia Community Services, offer swim lessons for all ages and skill levels.

Consider enrolling this summer—it’s an investment in safety and lifelong confidence.

During the June 16 City Council meeting, Fairfield leaders celebrated this achievement, expressing gratitude for the Lions Club’s dedication to preserving local heritage as the community prepares for the America 250 celebration.

The restoration will bring fresh paint, new lighting, and commemorative plaques that honor Fairfield’s role as an America 250 Pledge City.

Solano County Public Service Workers Launch 2-Day Strike

On January 13, 2026, around 2,000 Solano County public service workers launched a two-day strike, spotlighting stalled contract talks and persistent staff shortages.

Employees from departments such as health and human services, public works, and libraries rallied at sites in Fairfield, Vallejo, Vacaville, and Cordelia.

Richard Livingston Jr. and Linda Cheesman—veteran supervisors—shared concerns over overburdened workers and wages that make it difficult for staff to afford living locally.

The protest unified members from four unions, including SEIU Local 1021 and UAPD, who are demanding improvements in recruitment, retention, and compensation.

Meanwhile, county officials argue their recent $90 million offer balances fair pay with fiscal responsibility.

The strike led to delayed or closed services and heightened calls for fairer negotiations as talks remain ongoing.
