How Solano County 4-H Connects Young People

with Mentors and New Skills

Ai Generated Image

Solano County's 4-H program is proving there's far more to the organization than livestock and county fairs. Across seven local clubs, more than 300 young people are diving into STEM projects, creative arts, civic engagement, and leadership development — guided by over 100 adult volunteers and nearly as many youth volunteers.

One standout feature is the program's built-in mentorship model, where older members coach younger ones, building confidence on both sides of the relationship.

During the most recent program year, 4-H offered 44 project areas spanning science, technology, engineering, healthy lifestyles, and more. Clubs serve communities from Benicia and Vallejo to Dixon, Vacaville, and Rio Vista — and new volunteers with fresh expertise are always welcome.

One House Bakery: A Breakfast Worth Remembering

Sometimes a simple breakfast turns into a memorable local discovery.

During a recent visit to One House Bakery in Benicia, The Solano Spotlight enjoyed a breakfast sandwich served on a croissant that was hot out of the oven, with steaming, melted cheese. Paired with freshly brewed dark roast coffee, it was a breakfast worth remembering.

We also brought home two frozen chicken pot pies to enjoy another day. It's nice to find a bakery where breakfast isn't the only reason to stop in!

Huckleberry's: Southern Comfort Food Worth Coming Back For

Some restaurants become favorites because there's a meal you look forward to ordering every time. For The Solano Spotlight, Huckleberry's in Fairfield is one of those places.

Our go-to lunch is the bottomless soup and salad with grilled garlic bread. On our latest visit, we enjoyed chicken gumbo and sizzling-hot chili topped with cheese and chopped red onion. It's the meal we keep coming back for!

And if you're a fan of chicken-fried steak, biscuits, and gravy, Huckleberry's Southern-inspired breakfast menu gives you another reason to visit.

Max is approximately 74 pounds, neutered, house-trained, and crate-trained. He loves long walks, exploring new places, car rides, and spending time with his favorite humans.

But Max isn't always on the go! His foster family says he's a wonderful work-from-home companion who happily relaxes while everyone is busy. He also enjoys affection, brushing, and playful walks with other dogs.

Max's ideal home: An active, adult household with experienced Husky owners who can provide consistent training, structure, and plenty of outdoor adventures. Max needs a home without cats and does best with dogs who match his play style.

Could Max be your new best friend?
